Classic Comfort & Clever Storage In A Family-Focused Home

Warm, family-friendly, and endlessly functional, the Whitmore project blends modern cabinetry details with traditional balance and symmetry. From an inviting kitchen to a bold mudroom and thoughtfully planned office, every space supports daily life while reflecting elegant design sensibilities. The cabinetry is custom-built to meet the needs of a vibrant, busy household, with high-function storage and timeless materials that elevate everyday use.

Project Scope & Objectives

The client envisioned a home that could keep pace with family life while maintaining a strong sense of design cohesion across multiple spaces. Natural light, smart storage solutions, and subtle yet memorable design details were prioritized throughout, ensuring each room feels both functional and thoughtfully considered.

Key objectives centred on creating welcoming gathering spaces—particularly in the kitchen—while embracing symmetry to establish visual balance along feature walls. A palette of soft neutrals paired with moody accent colours was introduced to add warmth and understated elegance, and cabinetry was extended to the ceiling wherever possible to take full advantage of tall walls and maximize storage. Throughout the home, personalized zones for work, prep, storage, and display were carefully defined, supporting everyday routines while enhancing the overall flow and livability of the space.

Challenges & Considerations

The design approach focused on delivering high-volume storage while keeping each space bright, open, and free of visual clutter. Careful balance was struck between cabinetry styles—combining elements such as slab drawers and shaker doors—to add depth and interest without creating visual chaos. High ceilings were treated as an architectural asset rather than a challenge, with design decisions that enhance scale without overwhelming the rooms. Dedicated zones, including coffee bars and home offices, were seamlessly integrated to support daily routines while preserving overall flow and cohesion.

Solution & Implementation

Kitchen

This kitchen was designed for connection — with ample island seating, natural light, and generous prep space.

  • White oak island in Barbisan finish anchors the room with warmth.
  • Cloud White painted perimeter cabinets maintain a soft, neutral tone.
  • Slab upper drawers pair with 1.5” beveled shaker fronts on lower doors for layered texture.
  • Gold hardware adds subtle shine and refinement.
  • Symmetrical base cabinet sizes along the window wall enhance the room’s sense of balance.
  • A custom coffee bar in CC90 Natural Linen features a shiplap backing and flat-cut white oak shelving for display and storage.
  • Cabinet accessories include a garbage pullout, tray dividers, and a spice rack for everyday convenience.

Laundry & Mudroom

This dual-purpose space is as hardworking as it is stylish, designed to keep clutter at bay.

  • Backwoods CC630 painted cabinets bring rich colour and warmth.
  • 1.5” beveled shaker fronts with slab top drawers provide subtle detail.
  • Matte black hardware punctuates the space with contrast.
  • Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry maximizes storage on both walls.
  • A wood floating shelf and bench top in white oak add natural texture and seating.
  • Each family member has a dedicated space, making morning routines more manageable.

Office

A need for integrated desk space, the office delivers form and function in equal measure.

  • Painted cabinetry in Van Duesen Blue HC156 makes a bold, grounded statement.
  • Shiplap wall paneling softens the tall space and frames the work area.
  • Upper cabinets and open shelving sit directly on the desk surface for seamless storage.
  • Recessed shelving creates more functional workspace.
  • 1.5” beveled shaker doors with slab drawers maintain visual continuity with the rest of the home.
  • Matte black hardware ties in with the mudroom details.
  • A white oak desktop adds warmth and connects back to the kitchen and vanity materials.

Vanity

A simple yet elegant vanity with layered storage and personality.

  • Stained white oak cabinetry brings warmth to the bathroom palette.
  • Reeded glass doors on tall, recessed cabinetry offer both texture and a glimpse of personal items.
  • Symmetrical layout ensures balance while providing plenty of storage.
  • 1.5” Bevelled shaker fronts continue the home’s cabinetry language.
  • Gold hardware and accessories introduce a soft metallic sheen.

Outcome & Results

The Whitmore project results in a home that feels elevated yet effortless to live in, with each room thoughtfully tailored to support gathering, storage, work, and relaxation while maintaining a cohesive overall aesthetic. The kitchen now serves as a true hub, combining generous storage with refined style and an inviting island that encourages connection. The mudroom and laundry area, one of the home’s hardest-working spaces, remains composed and on-trend, while the home office integrates seamlessly into the layout with practical storage, visual interest, and a clearly defined work zone. The vanity introduces elegant storage solutions that echo the warm tones found throughout the home, and across the project, cabinetry details—including beveled shaker fronts, slab drawers, and reeded glass—create a unified look that feels layered and intentional without becoming repetitive.

Key Takeaways & Highlights

This home balances storage with style through floor-to-ceiling cabinetry and thoughtfully integrated accessories that meet everyday needs without compromising design. A natural connection is established through the use of white oak elements throughout the kitchen, mudroom, office, and vanity, creating a cohesive and harmonious flow between spaces. Symmetry and structure bring a sense of calm and clarity, with balanced proportions across walls, vanities, and work zones, while mixed finishes—combining painted surfaces, gold and black hardware, and shiplap accents—add visual depth and character. Designed with family life at the forefront, the home features intuitive zones and durable, beautiful materials that are intended to evolve with the household over time.
