Challenges & Considerations

This project encompassed cabinetry for the kitchen, living room, mudroom, and laundry room, each space designed with a focus on material warmth, ergonomic accessibility, and thoughtfully tailored storage solutions. Throughout the home, the goal was to create environments that feel welcoming and personal while delivering practical, everyday functionality.

Kitchen

In the kitchen, the design centred around a custom island with integrated seating, including a lowered section to enhance comfort and usability. Full-height cabinetry was introduced to maximize vertical storage, ensuring no space was wasted, while storage was added to both sides of the island to allow easy access from multiple directions. Standard base cabinets were replaced with drawers throughout, significantly improving ergonomics and accessibility. The resulting layout supports modern living with intuitive flow and efficiency, all while maintaining a warm, inviting character.

Living Room

In the living room, the design takes full advantage of the tall ceilings by incorporating accessible display shelving that aligns visually with the television, creating a cohesive and intentional focal wall. Closed storage was thoughtfully integrated on either side of the fireplace to provide balance and practical functionality, keeping everyday items neatly concealed. Symmetry plays a key role throughout the space, establishing a sense of calm, order, and structural harmony that enhances both the architecture and the overall living experience.

Outcome & Results

• A floating mantel shelf, crafted from maple, visually connects with surrounding cabinetry.
• The stain on the wood brings out the darker undertones in the flooring, tying the room together.

A symmetrical layout with open shelves above and base cabinets below frames the fireplace and anchors the living space.

Mudroom

The design responds to the client’s active lifestyle by incorporating open helmet storage that keeps essential gear organized and easily accessible. Cubbies were selected in place of traditional cabinet doors to promote natural ventilation and support quick, grab-and-go functionality, ensuring items can dry properly while remaining within reach.

An asymmetrical layout was intentionally introduced to reduce visual bulk and create a more dynamic, less rigid composition. This approach enhances both practicality and aesthetic balance, allowing the space to feel lighter and more purposeful while accommodating everyday movement and routine.

Open top shelving — intentionally not built to ceiling height — keeps the upper level within comfortable reach for daily use.

Laundry Room

The design thoughtfully accommodates the client’s pets by incorporating a built-in dog cage and a dedicated dog bed, seamlessly integrating these elements into the overall cabinetry so they feel intentional rather than added on. This approach ensures the space remains organized while supporting the practical needs of everyday life.

To maximize storage, cabinetry extends to the full ceiling height, taking advantage of vertical space and enhancing functionality. Symmetry is used to frame the room at either end, visually enclosing the space and creating a sense of balance and cohesion that ties the design together.
