The homeowners envisioned a space that seamlessly merges rustic charm with modern convenience, resulting in a layered, multi-material design that feels both inviting and highly functional. The brief called for a thoughtful balance between open, welcoming spaces and ample, intelligent storage, ensuring the home could support everyday living without sacrificing character or cohesion.

A rustic yet refined atmosphere was achieved through the use of rough-sawn oak paired with complementary materials, creating warmth and texture throughout. Functionality and storage were maximized in each room while maintaining strong design continuity, allowing spaces to flow naturally into one another. Intentional zones were created for work, socializing, and relaxation—from seating around the island to integrated makeup vanities and an efficient loft kitchenette—ensuring each area serves a clear purpose. Panel-ready appliances were incorporated to preserve a seamless cabinetry aesthetic, while the interplay between painted finishes and natural wood grain elements introduces visual contrast and depth, reinforcing the home’s distinctive yet cohesive identity.

Challenges & Considerations

This project was a multi-space transformation shaped by several layout considerations and site-specific constraints. Bold material choices, such as dark-stained oak, needed to be carefully balanced with the goal of maintaining a light, airy feel in smaller areas like the bathrooms and laundry room. Panel-ready appliances and concealed storage solutions were integrated to preserve clean sight lines, while symmetry and visual interest were thoughtfully maintained throughout. Varied ceiling heights and irregular wall angles—particularly in the loft and mudroom—required strategic design solutions to ensure both functionality and seamless visual flow. Despite the differing purposes and spatial limitations of each room, the overall design ensures that every space feels cohesive, intentional, and connected.

Solution & Implementation

Each room was addressed with a design-forward mindset that prioritized usability without sacrificing warmth or character.

Kitchen

The kitchen showcases a harmonious blend of natural texture and classic refinement. Wood and painted cabinetry is used to stunning effect, combining rough sawn oak stained in Sandlewood with MDF shaker doors painted in White Dove. The result is a space that feels grounded and warm, yet polished. Brushed nickel hardware adds a soft metallic sheen, echoing the understated luxury that runs throughout the project.

To make the most of vertical space, floor-to-ceiling cabinetry was installed, offering expansive storage without overwhelming the room. Dual countertop materials distinguish the island from the perimeter, adding depth and contrast.

At the heart of the kitchen is an integrated coffee nook — complete with sink and glass upper cabinets — that brings café functionality into the home. A suite of premium accessories enhances daily convenience, including a tray pullout, spice pullout, garbage and compost pullout with integrated cutting board, utensil and cutlery inserts, peg drawer inserts, a paper towel drawer, pocket doors, and tea dividers with touch-latch mechanisms.

Floating shelves flank the custom hood, tying the space together with visual balance and open storage. A showstopping feature is the custom pedestal dining table, seamlessly attached to the island, perfect for casual meals or entertaining.

Pantry

The pantry continues the kitchen’s cohesive style while adding its own bold flair. Painted in Hale Navy with champagne bronze hardware, the space is both functional and fashion-forward. Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry with cove crown moulding ensures generous storage while offering architectural detail.

A panel-ready dishwasher keeps appliances discreetly integrated, while floating rough sawn oak shelves echo the kitchen’s warm tones. Accessories include a Lazy Susan for corner access and a flip-up microwave cabinet, ensuring that everyday items are neatly tucked away.

Mudroom

Designed with busy families in mind, the mudroom strikes a perfect balance between utility and style. A v-groove backboard introduces texture and warmth, complementing the painted MDF shaker doors in Cheating Heart.

Matte black hardware and coordinating hooks provide functional detailing, while a rough sawn oak benchtop offers continuity with the kitchen’s material palette. Storage includes built-in shelving and a tall rod-hung cabinet, ideal for coats, bags, or cleaning tools.

Bathroom (1)

This bathroom uses rough sawn oak in a face-framed vanity design, adding authenticity and natural beauty to the space. Open shelving below provides easy towel storage, maintaining a light and accessible feel.

Bathroom (2)

Layered and luxurious, Bathroom 2 features rough sawn oak shaker doors in Sandlewood and a lowered makeup vanity designed for ergonomic ease. A thoughtful mix of open and closed storage offers functionality without clutter.

Gold hardware brings elegance and contrast, while a pullout with adjustable shelves and integrated shelf above the toilet help organize essentials in style.

Bathroom (3)

Materials and layout mirror those of Bathroom 1 but expand in scale and symmetry. The dual sink vanity uses rough sawn oak with face-framing, paired with gold hardware and a slatted lower shelf that’s perfect for linens or baskets. It’s a space that’s unified in tone and generous in storage.

Loft Kitchenette

Compact but complete, the loft kitchenette features MDF shaker doors painted in Artichoke, accented with two-step crown moulding for a finished look. Open rough sawn oak shelving with pot lighting adds both storage and ambience.

Gold hardware, a bar fridge, microwave niche, and integrated sink round out the space, making it ideal for guests, older kids, or late-night entertaining.

Laundry Room

The laundry room is a model of efficiency and elegance. MDF shaker doors painted in Urbane Bronze contrast beautifully with black hardware and textured glass upper cabinets, bringing dimension and subtle drama.

Custom storage solutions include a broom cabinet and a full-height spice pullout — reimagined for detergents and cleaning supplies. A stacked washer and dryer maximizes floor space, while floating shelves above the sink offer easy access to everyday essentials.

Outcome & Results

The completed project is a masterclass in blending rustic character with clean, practical design. The kitchen now functions as the heart of the home, offering ample room for cooking, entertaining, and conversation.
