Reimagining History With Clean Lines & Clever Storage

Part of a larger church-to-home transformation, the Pinkham residence showcases how function and beauty can come together in even the most architecturally unique environments. From the towering ceilings in the kitchen and closet to the symmetry of the mudroom, this project brings historical reverence and thoughtful organization into one cohesive story.

Project Scope & Objectives

Across the kitchen, closet, and mudroom, the project focused on blending modern utility with the home’s historic architecture, using smart storage solutions, symmetry, and vertical space as guiding principles. Storage was optimized in rooms with exceptionally tall ceilings through thoughtfully designed built-ins, while symmetry was used to maintain a sense of calm and balance throughout the home. In areas with limited natural light, design choices prioritized brightness and openness, and concealed storage solutions with touch-latch cabinetry were introduced to preserve clean sightlines. Each built-in was carefully crafted to feel integrated, intentional, and timeless within the home’s architectural context.

Challenges & Considerations

The home’s church origins presented unique design considerations, including deep-set windows and vaulted ceilings that required thoughtful integration. While the tall ceiling heights offered valuable opportunities for vertical storage and architectural expression, they also demanded careful planning to ensure accessibility and everyday usability. The narrow, light-limited mudroom needed to be designed in a way that avoided a closed-in feeling, and throughout the project, maintaining a cohesive aesthetic across multiple rooms—without resorting to repetitive or identical design elements—was a key challenge.

Solution & Implementation

Kitchen:

  • Custom painted cabinetry and island designed to fit within the tall structure.
  • Glass upper cabinet son either side of a custom hood to preserve symmetry.
  • Windows remain unobstructed, allowing natural light to pour in.
  • Brushed nickel hardware adds subtle shine without overwhelming the space.

Closet:

  • Full-wall cabinetry makes use of vertical height.
  • Touch-latch upper cabinets for clean lines and easy reach.
  • Pullout drawers and brushed nickel hardware for functionality and elegance.
  • Cabinetry painted to match the door colour, creating a seamless look.

Mudroom:

  • Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry wherever possible for maximum storage.
  • Built-in custom desk framed by symmetrical cabinetry on either side.
  • Bench seating by the door offers a practical moment of pause in the layout.
  • Painted cabinetry with a wood countertop and matching bench.
  • Matte black hardware.

Smart additions like an adjustable shelving pull-out between laundry machines and floating shelves stained to match the countertop.

Outcome & Results

This project resulted in a home that is as rich in character as it is in function. Each space strikes a balance between old and new, with subtle design touches — like matching paint to door tones or using floating shelves — that quietly support the overall aesthetic. The blend of custom craftsmanship, high-end hardware, and clever layouts ensures that the home’s ecclesiastical roots are honoured without sacrificing comfort or usability.

Key Takeaways & Highlights

Thoughtful touch-latch cabinetry and pullout solutions ensure easy access, even at elevated heights, supporting both function and usability. Symmetry and storage act as recurring design themes, grounding each space with a sense of order and intention. Mixed hardware finishes—brushed nickel in the kitchen and closet, paired with matte black in the mudroom—give each room its own distinct identity while maintaining overall cohesion. The result is a church conversion done right, seamlessly blending clean, modern design with respect for the home’s architectural integrity.
